How did it start?

As always in the beginninings of anything worthwhile, anything that later manifests itself as a powerful activity has always had its beginnings in the smooth, solitary quietness behind hidden doors. So it happened in Gross Gerau too.

Sometime in the month of July 1986 there happened three heads to together: an academic doctor from Muenster (Dr. Mathew Mandapathil) , another medical doctor from Gross Gerau (Dr. Joseph Thiruvath), and the Vicar of the Catholic church in Gross Gerau (Rev. Fr. Pfahl) : the idea of an association in Gross Gerau for an Indo-German cultural co-existence and mutual growth was conceived by this trinity. Accordingly, in a gathering on August 17, 1986, in the Cathloic parish in GG, on the occassion of Independence Day celebrations and the commemorations of the Ascension of the Holy Mary, the idea of founding an Indian association was presented with highlights on the advantages it might bring to both the communities in Gross Gerau, especially to the Indian community (pre dominantly Malayalees) . At the suggestion of the above gathering and another get-togethher in Cathloic-church parish hall on Aug. 31, 1986, where constitutionally an adhoc committee consisting of President: Mr.Joseph Theruvath, Secretary: Mr.Antoo Parani and Cashier:Mr.George Poovan was also elected, who were to carry out he preliminaries of bringing the association into functioning and to present its findings in another gathering on October 11, 1986.

The October 11 gathering was really a big event for the Malayalees in Gross Gerau. It was attended by every malayalee in Gross Gerau and was the podium of heated discussions from 15:00 hrs to 24:00 hrs. However, the whole labor was not in vain because the association Navodaya was born out of that labor, with a democratically composed consistitution and a democratically elected offical executive committee consisting of: President: Mr.Babu Makil, Secretary: Mr.Antoo Parani and Cashier: Mr.Philip Purackal. Here is an extract from Navodaya's first annual report 1986/87, to show the progress Navodaya was making: "The report by the Executive Committee of Indian Malayalee Association called Navodaya functioning with Gross Gerau as its base of operation, presented at about 1500hrs on 7.11.1987"

That was a good start: Navodaya has had several things to its credit since its founding. Navodaya was later registered in the Amtsgericht Gross Gerau under the address:

Navodaya Indischer Verein e.V.
Walburga Strasse 6
64521 Gross Gerau

Later on, the following Post Box address was also added

Navodaya Indischer Verein e.V.
